いろいろハマったのですが、だいたいやり方は出尽くしていると思うので、結果となるようなところだけ書きます。

まず、postfixをapt-getします。設定ファイルは main.cf だけをいじくりました。比較的短いので全文を上げます。

saslをインストールするのを忘れてはいけません。
# apt-get install sasl2-bin libsasl2-modules libsasl2-2
これでmailコマンドを打ってみると、とりあえずはちゃんとメールが発信されました。ただ、FromがGmail固有のものだとかいろいろあります。それはGmailの設定の話なのでここでは割愛します。多少の制限はあるも、25番ポートを開けたりしなくて良いので、このように外部のSMTPを使うというのはありなのではないかと思います。
